Mongrel

Mongrel is an immersive multidisciplinary work honouring a journey of becoming and self-acceptance. Large-scale macramé installations and costumes create a visceral environment reflecting the cyclical and ongoing nature of healing.

My surname, Barner, is rooted in labor, a reminder of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and enduring oppression in the States. My father’s family, horrified by the prospect of a mixed-race child, called me a mongrel. Growing up in predominantly white communities, I internalized this rejection. In my early twenties, I began to confront the biases inherited against my own body. In 2020, I saw myself as beautiful for the first time. Beauty is messy, encompassing both light and darkness in aura and presence.

Mongrel is a vulnerable transformation ritual. It confronts loss and embraces difference to generate self-empowerment. Dedicated to anyone who has ever been made to feel othered.

Amara Barner’s performance will take place:

  • October 14 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
